Common Hot Water System Questions
We go through some common problems in a little more detail to help you identify the issues you may be facing at your home. Again, if you’re unsure call a professional who fixes hot water systems like yours. Notably, before attempting any solutions with your gas hot water system, it is important that you are competent and are confident in turning the gas valve off safely for worse case scenarios.
Why don’t I have any Hot Water????
Electric Hot Water Systems and Gas Hot Water Systems are completely different; see below for the steps on Electric and Gas separately.
Electric Hot Water Systems.
- Check if electricity is delivering to hot water system. If circuit breaker tripped, you would have to switch it back on at your electrical box.
- Check the high-temperature cutoff to the water heater.
- Click RESET if there is no power or no clicking sound you will need a professional.
Gas Hot Water Systems
- Make sure gas to hot water is turned on.
- Check if the pilot light is on. If not, switch the gas off and allow gas to dissipate before reigniting.
- Check if the burner ignites (if not call a professional)
Note: if you have followed all the steps above and hot water has not restarted it may have only run out. More than likely this is because your current hot water system is too small. Installing a larger hot water system will ensure that there will be enough hot water to keep up with your showers and washing up!
Why is My Water Too Hot? (no lukewarm water only scalding)?
This issue of high-temperature water probably has something to do with the thermostat on both an Electric and Gas Water Heater. You can check your thermostat, and turn down the temperature on your water heater’s thermostat dial. Following this step wait a couple of hours and see if the temperature control has corrected. If the problem doesn’t rectify itself, your valve may require repair or replacement. This step should be undertaken by a licensed plumber who fixes hot water systems, and if you have a TMV valve, a plumber licensed to fix those specifically.
What Does it Mean if the Hot Water Coming out of Taps is Discoloured?
- Discolouration (usually yellow or brown water) can be caused by high metal concentration in your water.
- To try and remove it, you can let it run for a few minutes.
- If there is no change, you may need to install a whole house filter.
Why Does My Hot Water Smell?
If you are getting a rotten egg smell associated with water, it is usually caused by a reaction between Anode and hot water. To remove the smell, you can run the hot water for two to three minutes. For those familiar with hot water systems, you can flush the tank.
If you are getting a garlic-like smell associated with water (GAS ONLY) this may mean the pilot light has turned off. Here’s what you can do:
- Turn gas valve off.
- Wait until the gas smell has dissipated.
- Relight Pilot light.
